Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this site for?

This site is for anyone involved or interested in education or culture in Bristol Bay: New arrivals, long-time residents, professionals working toward certification, families, community groups, and others looking to align their teaching with the cultures and values of the region. The Cultural Education Resource Center provides tools and connections to help educators thrive professionally, personally, and culturally.

Can I submit a resource or lesson plan?

YES! We welcome contributions from teachers, culture bearers, and community members. If you have lesson plans, recipes, activity ideas, or other resources, please contact Helen John at  helen@bristolbayfoundation.org.

Are the C3, M.Ed., and Apprenticeship programs still active?

Program activities often change over time due to funding and other changes. At this time, C3: Cross-Cultural Competence is no longer active in the Bristol Bay region. C3 is active in the Northwest Arctic (NWA) region in partnership with the NWA Borough School District.

The Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning focused on Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Apprenticeship Program are still active in the Bristol Bay region! Please see the contact/partners page for how to enroll.

Why does culturally responsive teaching matter?

When students see their cultures, families, and ways of life reflected in the classroom, learning becomes more relevant and engaging. Research shows this approach not only improves academic outcomes but also strengthens identity and community trust.

How do I use the lesson plans and resources?

All resources are free to use and adapt for your classroom. Each lesson plan is grounded in cultural knowledge and aligned with educational standards. Feel free to adapt them for your classroom or use them exactly the way they are.

How do I know the resources are accurate and culturally appropriate?

Every lesson and activity is reviewed with input from local educators, cultural partners, and language experts. Our goal is to ensure materials are respectful, relevant, and representative of the communities we serve.

I’m moving to Bristol Bay. Where can I find practical information about living there?

Check out our Living & Working in Rural Alaska page. This section includes guidance on housing, transportation, cost of living, seasonal preparation, and reflections from other educators who’ve been through the transition.
