Welcome to the Classroom
Unit 1 supports the beginning of the school year by helping students build a classroom community grounded in respect, belonging, responsibility and positive communication. Through Alutiiq language learning, students practice introducing themselves, learning about classmates, using classroom materials responsibly, moving safely through shared spaces, and giving and following directions with care.

Ling’aklluki
“To respect”
The central Alutiiq value for this unit comes from the principle of having respect for all living beings and things. In the Alutiiq worldview, this encompasses the land, sea, sky, and all of their inhabitants. This value appears in all spheres of Alutiiq life: how we treat others and the world around us is important because of the close relationships we have with other living beings and the natural world. Respect is also about reciprocity and giving back when we take something. In the context of this unit, Linga’klluki manifests in how we greet one another, how we show patience and share, how we treat classmates and items in the classroom, and how we engage in appropriate and respectful ways.
