Ilakuilukut

“Sharing”

The central Alutiiq value for this unit is at the heart of Alutiiq daily life. Before modern currency, like money, Alutiiq people bartered and traded for the things we needed. We also shared things when we had excess or when we saw someone in need. This stems partly from the region’s harsh environmental conditions, which required people to rely on one another for survival. While Alutiiq people had methods for preservation, there were still limitations on how long food could be stored. Instead of letting things go to waste, we shared what we had. Ilakuilukut reflects the Alutiiq belief that everyone shares a responsibility to care for others, even strangers, and to avoid wastefulness.
