Ilapet

“Our family”

The central Alutiiq value for this unit focuses on the deep relationships Alutiiq people have with their family members and ancestors. Traditionally, Alutiiq households were composed of several generations, with communal child-rearing and an emphasis on close cross-generational relationships. Family extends beyond nuclear units: an integral part of kinship for Alaska Native peoples is knowing who our relatives are and where our family comes from. Those who know who they are and where their family and ancestors come from have a stronger sense of cultural identity and an increased sense of self-worth and overall well-being.
