“Our land”
The central Alutiiq value for this unit focuses on ties to place and land. Traditional Alutiiq homelands are vast and varied, from the Prince William Sound to the Kenai Peninsula to Kodiak Island and all along the Alaska Peninsula. These diverse geographic features provide access to transportation routes, abundant food resources, and conditions well suited to the needs of our communities. Through observation, experience, and generations of knowledge, Alutiiq people have developed a deep understanding of how to travel safely and efficiently across both land and water. Alutiiq people’s ingenuity, adaptability, and enduring respect for the lands and waters have enabled them to continue living, subsisting, and caring for our homelands.
