Liicugtukut

“We want to learn”

The central Alutiiq value for this unit is a core aspect of traditional life. Lessons were taught mainly through doing, where the learner was made to observe, listen, and then attempt. No one was expected to learn a skill quickly; instead, teachings usually started from a young age, and developed alongside the person, growing in complexity as they did. This allowed all members of society to have a role or responsibility in the community and to begin practicing skills they would need in life.

For example, playing enagooks (or aug’caaqs)/darts helped young kids learn hand-eye coordination and practice throwing at a moving target, and making clothing for suaruat/dolls taught; skills they would need as adults to make full-sized clothing and regalia. Both men and women spent many hours perfecting skills that were necessary for survival and everyday life.
